How to spot a good quality waterproof dog collar

How to spot a good quality waterproof dog collar

There are a few key factors to consider when trying to identify a good quality waterproof dog collar:

1. Material: Look for collars made with quality waterproof materials such as Biothane. These materials are resistant to water and will not become saturated or heavy when wet. Be wary of websites that mention waterproof materials but no specifics around the brand or type of webbing they use, as these are often cheaper imitations of waterproof webbing that are lower quality and usually won't have the longevity of products such as genuine Biothane.

2. Hardware: Make sure the hardware on the collar is also waterproof. Stainless steel and solid brass are good choices, as they are resistant to rust and corrosion. Avoid collars with plastic or cheap metal hardware, as these may not be as durable or resistant to water. Always check on product listings for details around the hardware that is used, as poor quality hardware can lead to a reduced lifespan of your dog's collar.

3. Finishing: Examine the finishing on the collar to ensure it has been crafted well. This includes the ends of the collar and checking if they are sealed or if the ends are frayed. Ends that are frayed can lead to an unsightly appearance over time and weaken the collar as dirt and moisture can be absorbed into the webbing.

4. Collar keepers: Check if the collar has a 'keeper' included. This is a small loop that attaches to the collar that you can feed any excess from the end of the collar through to keep the collar laying flat on your dog's neck. This often isn't included in collars, so keep an eye out for this.

5. Fit: Make sure the collar fits your dog properly. It should be snug but not too tight, and it should not slip off easily. See our Size Guide to find the best fit for your dog. 6. Brand reputation: Do some research on the brand of the collar. Look for reviews from other customers and consider the company's reputation for producing high-quality, waterproof products.

7. Price: While price is not always a good indicator of quality, it can be a useful consideration. Avoid very cheap collars, as they may not be made with high-quality materials or construction.
